Why Idaho?
Ideal Grape Growing Conditions
Southern Idaho offers ideal growing conditions for vinifera grape varieties due to its high-elevation vineyards, well-drained volcanic ash soils and northerly latitude, which fosters a long growing season. The region’s cold winters allow the vines a restful dormancy, while the warm days and cool nights of summer yield grapes with perfectly balanced sugars and acids.
The Snake River Valley
The Snake River exerts a benevolent influence on the vines, moderating temperatures during the cold winter months and siphoning heat from the hillsides in summer. The valley’s dry growing season climate minimizes the risk of mildew, and its extended fall harvest season allows the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly, developing intense varietal characteristics while retaining high levels of acidity.
Idaho on the World Stage
Idaho is home to 37 wineries and over 2,000 vine acres. Twenty-two grape varieties are cultivated, with Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling leading the way. In addition to world-class table wines, Idaho wineries produce superb sparkling wines, fruit wines and ice wines.
